ROYAL DALREGIMENT
I 13
History:
The regiment traces its heritage to the fänika (a tactical
unit used in the later dark ages) raised in Dalarna in 1542. The oldest documents are from
1543. To avoid conscription the people of Dalarna promised to constantly supply 1400 men
to the army. From this infantry Gustaf II Adolf formed a regiment that in 1628 was
devided into three smaller regiments of which one was in Dalarna. The first commander was
Åke Oxenstierna. The regiment was located in Falun and raised the 13th
Norrlandbrigade that was an oversnowbrigade being mechanized with Pbv 401 (MT-LB). The
regiment had extremely close ties with the local population and any suggestions to disband
it would always encounter fierce recistance from the civilian population that has always
supported the regiment. Nevertheless the regimnent was selected for disbandment
in 2000.
