ROYAL SKARABORGS REGIMENT
I 9 P 4
History:
The regiment traces its heritage to the fänika (tactical unit used in
the later dark ages), raised in Västergötland in the 1500:s. The oldest document telling
of fänikas and men- at - arms in Skaraborg are from 1543. Of these fänikas in
Västergötland and Dalsland a regiment was formed in 1613 of 3000 men. This was split in
3 smaller regiments in 1621 - 1624. One of these became Skaraborgs regiment,
the other two became Älvsborgs regiment and Hallands regiment.
In 1913 the regiment was located in Skövde where it still remains. In 1939 the regiment
organized an armored batallion and in 1942 the regiment was transferred to the newly
created armor corps. The regiment got the new name Skaraborgs armored regiment
and the new designation P 4. In 1963 the regiment got its old name back. From
1993-2000 the
regiment raised the 9:th mechanized brigade which was beeing reorganized from an armored
brigade with Strv 103C and Pbv 302 to a mechanized brigade with Strv 122 and CV90.
After 2000 the regiment will continue to train Strv 122 and CV 90 units for the
