History:
The regiment traces its heritage back to the fänika ( the
tactical unit used in the late dark ages) raised in Västergötland during the 1500:s and
1600:s. In 1628 these were gathered into a regiment called Wästgöthe and Daals
cavalry. Later it became known as Västgöta cavalry. In 1792 it became a
dragoonregiment and in 1802 it got the name Västgöta linedragoonregiment. This
was changed to Västgöta dragoonregiment in 1806. In 1811 the regiment was
reorganized into the infantry and got its final name. It was located in Vänersborg and
was disbanded in 1927.
Colors:
The regiments colors are those of Västergötland, black and yellow,
and the banner was very similar to the one of Skaraborgs regiment.
